MET Removals, run by three brothers, Michael, Ethan and Troy, since 2022 and rated 5.0 stars from 161 Google reviews, covers East London and Redbridge for house moves, flat moves, office relocations, packing and storage. Parking comes up on almost every East London job, and getting it wrong adds hours to the day or leads to a fine. This guide covers when a permit or bay suspension is needed across Redbridge, Ilford, Walthamstow, Waltham Forest and the wider East London area, and how to sort it before move day.
Do you need a parking suspension for a removals van in East London?
Usually, yes, in residential parts of East London. Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs) cover large parts of Redbridge, Waltham Forest, Hackney and Newham. If your road is in a CPZ, a removals van counts as a non-permit holder and cannot park legally during the zone’s operating hours without a bay suspension in place.
Outside CPZ hours, often evenings and Sundays, though hours vary by road, a van can usually load without a suspension. That limits when your move can start, which shapes the whole day. For a flat in a purpose-built block or newer development, also check with the building manager: many East London blocks have dedicated loading bays with time windows and fob access to book in advance, separately from any on-street suspension.
How parking suspensions work by borough
Each borough runs its own process, fee and lead time, and using the wrong borough’s form or applying too late is one of the most common move-day problems. These are the current figures at the time of writing, so confirm on the council page before you apply.
| Borough (covers) | Notice needed | Cost | Council link |
| Redbridge (Ilford, Barkingside, Wanstead, South Woodford) | about 7 working days | £55 admin plus £55 per 5m bay per day | redbridge.gov.uk |
| Waltham Forest (Walthamstow, Chingford, Leyton) | 7 working days | £120 application fee for domestic removals, then £100 per bay per day for extra days | walthamforest.gov.uk |
| Hackney (Hackney, Stoke Newington, Dalston) | 7 working days | £96.50 admin plus £35 per space per day, first-day home-move discount | hackney.gov.uk |
| Newham (Stratford, Royal Docks, Forest Gate) | 10 working days | £25 admin plus £23 per bay per day | newham.gov.uk |
| Barking and Dagenham (Barking, Dagenham) | check the portal | confirm current fee | lbbd.gov.uk |
Newham needs the most notice at 10 working days, so if you are moving in Stratford or the Royal Docks, treat the suspension as the first thing to arrange.
Applying for a suspension: step by step
The portals differ, but the core steps are the same across East London.
- Find your road and check whether it is in a CPZ. Councils publish CPZ maps online, search “[borough] controlled parking zone map”.
- Note the zone’s operating hours for your road. Some run Monday to Friday, others seven days. Your start time depends on this.
- Apply through the borough’s portal with the road name, the bay or nearest lamp-post number, the date and the duration.
- Pay the fee by card. Councils rarely take cash applications.
- Check the confirmation covers the right road and date, and fix any errors before the boards go up.
- On move day, check the suspension boards are actually in place before the van arrives. If they are missing, call the council’s parking team, do not assume it is valid.
If your buyer’s removals team is moving in the same day on the same road, a common Redbridge and Walthamstow chain pattern, two separate suspensions may be needed, one per van.
If you miss the notice deadline
Miss the 7 to 10 working-day window and the council usually cannot process it in time. Three fallbacks, none ideal: some boroughs offer a fast-track emergency suspension for an extra fee, though availability is not guaranteed; you can start outside CPZ hours with an early or late move; or you park on a yellow line and accept the risk. A London Penalty Charge Notice is commonly £80 to £130 depending on the contravention, halved if paid within 14 days, and the van can be towed if it obstructs the road. Booking early, the week you confirm your date, avoids all of it.
ULEZ and access charges
Most of East London is inside the Ultra Low Emission Zone, which runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and a move crossing into central London may also enter the Congestion Charge zone. MET Removals includes ULEZ, fuel and any congestion charge in every fixed-price quote, so the price you see is the price you pay. See our house removals service for how we plan access into the quote.
FAQs
Do I need a parking suspension for a removals van in Ilford?
Ilford is in the London Borough of Redbridge, and much of central Ilford, including the roads near Ilford Lane and the station, sits in a Controlled Parking Zone. If your road is in a CPZ and it is operating on your move day, you will need a suspension. Redbridge asks for about seven working days’ notice. See our Ilford removals page, and confirm the boards are up before the van arrives.
How far in advance should I apply for a suspension in Walthamstow?
Waltham Forest asks for seven working days, and applying about two weeks ahead is safer, as it leaves room to fix errors or chase a delayed confirmation. Over bank holidays the working-day count excludes the holiday, so add a day. See our Walthamstow removals page.
What happens if a van parks on a yellow line without a suspension?
A warden can issue a Penalty Charge Notice, commonly £80 to £130 depending on the contravention, reduced by half if paid within 14 days. On a double yellow the van can also be towed if it obstructs the road, which delays the whole move and, in a chain, can push completion past the deadline. A suspension booked in advance is the lower-risk, lower-cost route.
Does MET Removals handle the parking suspension application?
We advise on what is needed and flag it at the quote stage, but the application must be submitted by the person connected to the address, as councils require the applicant to be linked to the property. We give you the timing, the borough contact and the bay reference, and you submit the form. Unsure if your road needs one? Ask when you enquire and we will check the zone map for you.
